Ian works with Ph.D. students and postdocs across campus to support their professional development as teachers and help them prepare for future faculty life. He also oversees required TA and LA training and orientation, including the 300-person doctoral TA training each August, and supervises the CETLI Graduate Fellows for Teaching Excellence program. In addition, Ian teaches courses on the global history of medicine and technology for the Department of History and Sociology of Science and on the Indian Ocean for South Asia Studies. In 2024, he is teaching HSOC 0490: Comparative Medicine, one of the two foundational courses for the popular Health & Societies major. He hopes this does not make it less popular.

Ian holds a B.A. in History from Queen's University, an M.A. in Chinese History from the University of British Columbia, and completed his Ph.D. in South Asian History at the University of Pennsylvania. From 2004 to 2009, he was on the faculty at Saint Joseph's University. His research interests include the history of technology and labor history as viewed through the operations of multinationals in late colonial India.
