This workshop focuses on anti-racist approaches to designing syllabi and assignments for both temporal and thematic survey courses. Graduate students, contingent faculty, and junior faculty are regularly asked to teach courses with titles like “U.S. Literature Since 1865,” “English Poetry Before 1700,” and “Contemporary Global Anglophone Literature.” This workshop will address how to approach the survey course’s expectations of breadth with a focus on centering marginalized writers and critiquing racist canonical texts. We will focus on how to develop approaches and collective vocabulary that enable students to critically read racist, anti-Black, sexist, homophobic, transphobic, and ableist content. We will discuss how to design syllabi that use the literature or theory survey course to enable students to analyze intellectual, social, and political transformation over time, and to support students’ capacity to read and write critically in other disciplines. While this workshop focuses on the literature or critical theory survey in particular, graduate students and faculty in all fields are welcome.
