Every classroom is laden with invisible power dynamics between faculty and students, teaching assistants, and among students which greatly influence the teaching and learning process. In this session, we will discuss how to effectively set expectations with students, how to develop a class culture that makes space for diverse perspectives and participation, strategies for managing antagonistic students, and how to navigate gendered and other imbalances in class participation. We will discuss how to navigate difference both inside the classroom and the periphery, such as class correspondence with students and faculty.
Take-away snacks will be provided.
All graduate students are welcome. This event grows out of concerns in the Annenberg School for Communication and so may be most useful to students in related fields.
Counts toward the CETLI Teaching Certificate.
