Intentional Design for Active Learning in Large Engineering Classes
In large engineering courses, it is tempting to pack every lecture with as much material as possible. But coverage is not the same as learning. In this workshop, we discuss an alternative: covering fewer concepts more deeply, using demonstrations to make key physical principles visible and memorable, and structuring class time so that students engage rather than passively absorb. We will discuss the practical challenges of active learning at scale and identify strategies that graduate instructors can adapt for their own teaching.
All graduate students are welcome. This event grows out of concerns in the Mechanical Engineering & Applied Mechanics department, and so may be most useful to students in related fields.
Counts toward the CETLI Teaching Certificate.
