Whether on Zoom, in a large lecture hall, or even in a small seminar room, the university classroom can be isolating for students. As we return to campus this year, we have an opportunity to rethink the college-level course as an exercise in community building as much as in higher learning. How do we teach students to work together to solve both abstract and concrete problems? How do we lead classrooms that encourage meaningful relationships, robust discussions, and group accountability? How can we better prepare students to be active and collaborative community members in the classroom so that they might be better prepared for life after college? In this workshop, we will answer these questions as we discuss how to foster meaningful connections between students and how to build a learning community together. We will cover topics including creating community values, leading discussion and debates, designing collaborative assignments, and leading group work effectively.
