Hands-On Learning: Teaching with the Materials Library

Facilitator: Michael Carroll, Assistant Director of the Fisher Fine Arts Library
Convener: Rhea Swain, CETLI Graduate Fellow, History of Art

This workshop will introduce graduate student instructors and TAs across disciplines to potentially utilize the over 10,000 material samples available in the collection of the Fisher Fine Arts Library’s Materials Library, in addition to other special collections at the Penn Libraries, like the Kislak Center and the Penn Museum Library. The Materials Library is an excellent teaching resource for hands-on learning that caters to the pedagogical and research needs of fields ranging from art history and design to materials sciences and engineering, as well as business and medicine. In addition to engaging with hands-on learning using objects from the Materials Library and discussing different approaches to learning about the technical, cultural, and economic aspects of materials, we will also learn more about the processes of arranging class visits and consultations.

All graduate students are welcome. This event grows out of concerns in the History of Art department, and so may be most useful to students in related fields.

Counts toward the CETLI Teaching Certificate.
