Creating Community Guidelines

Facilitator: Natalia Enid Aponte Borges, CETLI Graduate Fellow, Earth & Environmental Science

As TA’s, our goals can include fostering positive interactions and feelings of community in the classroom. A way to begin is by establishing community guidelines, also known as “ground rules” or “agreements” in collaboration with your students to ensure an atmosphere of mutual respect, better engagement, belonging, and inclusivity during learning. These guidelines or mutual agreements can differ depending on the community and learning objectives. In this workshop, we will consider some general community guidelines for different types of classroom environments, how to manage them, and examine some sample guidelines. We will also discuss how to create a page or syllabus section for your students. By establishing these guidelines, you can ensure better interactions, discussions, and an inclusive learning environment for the entire community.
