Bringing Insight from Allied Disciplines into the Religious Studies Classroom

Facilitator: Professor Jolyon Thomas, Religious Studies
Convener: Jeremy Steinberg, CTL Grad Fellow, Religious Studies

The wide range of both research methodology and subject matter in Religious Studies means that it is an inherently interdisciplinary field. Consequently, nearly all scholars in Religious Studies will have a foot in some other department. In this workshop, we will talk about strategies for bridging these disciplinary boundaries. In particular, Professor Thomas, who held a position in Penn’s EALC department before moving to RELS, will reflect on how his teaching in EALC has informed his teaching in RELS (and vice versa). Although focused on teaching in the Religious Studies classroom, this workshop may also prove generative for students for whom Religious Studies is the allied discipline.

All graduate students are welcome. This event grows out of concerns in the Religious Studies department, and so may be most useful to students in related fields.

Counts toward the CETLI Teaching Certificate.
