Bioengineering Senior Design Experience: More Than Just Engineering Design

Facilitator: Drs. Erin Berlew & Michael Siedlik, Bioengineering
Convener: Aria Huang, CETLI Graduate Fellow, Bioengineering

The bioengineering senior design experience provides an opportunity for students to identify an unmet biomedical need, design a solution to address that need, and develop a refined prototype to demonstrate that solution. As instructors for this course, we facilitate a learning environment that enables students to lead a hands-on design effort to address real-world challenges with real- world partners, build entrepreneurship pathways, and become responsible innovators with the capacity to adapt to and lead in a rapidly evolving world. In this workshop, we will share our learnings from teaching bioengineering senior design at Penn for the last five years, including lessons and examples of teaching resilience, project management, teamwork, and accountability. The session will be discussion-driven and focused on practical takeaways for engaging and guiding students through this capstone design learning experience.

All graduate students are welcome. This workshop draws on our experiences teaching Bioengineering senior design, and so may be most useful to those in related fields or with interest in teaching practical, team-based courses.
