As PhD students, we develop deep expertise in highly specialized fields. But what happens when the teaching needs of a department do not directly align with our area of research? In this workshop, Dr. Mike Kane will lead a discussion on how to recognize and leverage the broader knowledge and skills we bring to the classroom, even when a course falls outside our narrow area of expertise. Together, we will explore how to identify transferable skills, articulate our broader teaching expertise, and recognize opportunities to teach a range of courses. Participants will leave with a broader understanding of the types of courses they could teach and greater confidence in their ability to step beyond the boundaries of their dissertation research to meet the teaching needs of a department.

All graduate students are welcome. This event grows out of concerns in the Neuroscience department, and so may be most useful to students in related fields.
