During the month of April, CETLI will host two public events that will offer strategies for refreshing the way we engage our students in and out of the classroom. Each event promises to be an inspiring opportunity to connect with the teaching community across the university and celebrate teaching excellence at Penn. Faculty, students, and staff are welcome to attend.
On Tuesday, April 21 at 3:30pm, six faculty from across the university will contribute their experiences integrating AI into their teaching on a panel on AI-Informed Activities and Assignments. The panelists include Faizan Alawi (Dental School), Elizabeth Emery (Nursing), Bhuv Jain (SAS), James Petersson (SAS), and Sarah Pierce (Law). During the panel, speakers will share how their innovations with AI shape in- and out-of-class activities for students. The event will conclude with an informal reception, where panelists will be available to answer questions and discuss their strategies.
Then, on April 27 at 5:00pm, Jie Deng (Nursing) will deliver the Evan C Thompson lecture “Teaching Students with Varying Experiences and Educations.” As the current Evan C Thompson Chair for Teaching Excellence, Deng will speak about how to bring students’ individual interests and past experiences into the classroom to help students engage, connect, and learn. The Evan C Thompson lecture takes place every three years, showcasing outstanding teaching at Penn.
“Both of these events explore some of the major teaching challenges of this moment, offering us practices to consider,” says Executive Director, Bruce Lenthall. “More than that, by coming together to discuss outstanding teaching, all of us affirm its importance for us and for Penn.”
