Leading Effective Office Hours

Facilitator: Anna Linetskaya, CETLI Fellow, Comparative Literature & Literary Theory

Office hours provide a valuable opportunity to learn where your students are in their individual learning process, build connections, and foster deeper learning outside of the classroom. However, TAs and graders often struggle to make these sessions effective and engaging while staying mindful of the demands on their own time and workload. In this workshop, we will explore a variety of methods for structuring office hours, strategies for setting boundaries and managing time during high-demand periods, and techniques to encourage independent student learning beyond the session. We will also discuss ways to motivate students to come prepared, use office hours as a space for intellectual exploration, and build student confidence. You will leave with actionable tools to transform your office hours into a space where both you and your students thrive.
