Getting feedback from your students before the end of the semester can help you make sure your students learn what they should and that you and your students have a productive semester. Whether you decide to use a technology tool or just paper forms, CETLI has created resources that you can use to create a mid-term evaluation and consider effective questions to ask your students.
Choose an Evaluation Tool
Determine the Evaluation Questions
As you draft questions, consider what you want to know and what students will be able to assess about their learning. Some questions to get you started include:
- Assessment & Grading: Which course assignments have helped you understand the topic or stimulated you to be more interested in the topic?
- Overall: What has the instructor done that has helped you learn? What specific advice would you have for this professor about things they could do to help you learn better?
- In-Class Work: How does the instructor's use of in-class time contribute to your learning the course material? Are there particular activities that are more or less useful for your learning?
Process and Respond to the Feedback
To help you make the most of your students’ responses, CETLI staff can meet with you to process the feedback and think about constructive ways to incorporate it into the rest of the semester.
Student feedback is a conversation. Once you have thought about their responses, come to class and tell them the changes you are making now, changes you can't make now but will in the future, and explain what you are not willing to change and why. Discussing the feedback with students signals that you value their feedback and helps to build trust.
