Trans-Affirming Pedagogy in the Sciences

Facilitator: Cam Smith, Bioengineering, Electrical & Systems Engineering, Physics & Astronomy, Neurology, and Psychiatry
Convener: Nat Rivkin, CETLI Graduate Fellow for Inclusive & Equitable Teaching, English

Trans, non-binary, gender diverse, and gender expansive students are present in growing numbers at Penn. How do we as STEM faculty and instructors provide learning environments that are respectful and supportive to these students? What do we not know about the trans experience? How might our classroom practices, pedagogical methods, and content adversely impact this particular group of marginalized students? In this workshop, we will take a practical approach to these questions, providing faculty and instructors with helpful information, simple examples, and concrete recommendations for building a trans-affirming classroom in the sciences.
