Mentoring Undergraduates

Convener: Erynn Johnson, CETLI Graduate Fellow, Earth & Environmental Science

Graduate students are teachers both in and out of the classroom. In addition to our roles as teaching assistants many of us choose to mentor undergraduates in research and professional capacities. While mentoring students is often exciting and rewarding, it can also be challenging to learn to manage students outside of structure of the classroom. You may find yourself wondering: How much independence should I give my mentee? How can I help achieve my mentee’s goals as well as my own? How much do I want my mentee to learn by doing and how much guidance should I provide for the sake of efficiency? In this workshop we will develop concrete tools to make effective and efficient use of your time as a mentor.
