How do we cultivate accessibility and inclusivity in our teaching practices as graduate TAs and instructors? And why is this especially important at Penn? In this workshop, we will approach accessible and inclusive pedagogy as a process of removing barriers. Academia is not a neutral educational space, and we will explore different ways that identity and experience can impact learning here. We will identify some common ways to make course design, policies, lesson plans, and assessments more accessible and inclusive. This session will focus in particular on the framework of Universal Design for Learning, which we will practice applying to common teaching scenarios. By deconstructing our assumptions and practices, we can reimagine the academic classroom as an accessible and inclusive space for all learners to discover their full potential.
