AI in Teaching: When to Integrate It, and When to Design Around It

Facilitator: Dr. Kristen Hipolit, Neuroscience
Convener: Lilly Ryll, CETLI Graduate Fellow, Neuroscience

Generative AI has transformed the landscape of teaching and learning. While AI use can create challenges for student engagement, learning, and assessment, it can also be a valuable educational tool when incorporated selectively and intentionally. In this interactive workshop, we will explore how generative AI is shaping student learning and how instructors can thoughtfully design course material in response. The first part of the session will focus on designing assignments that cannot be readily completed using AI and instead require students to demonstrate their own thinking and learning. In the second part, we will consider ways to intentionally incorporate AI into teaching and assignments to foster learning and critical thinking. Participants will leave with practical strategies for balancing technology-free and AI-enhanced approaches to create learning environments that best support their course objectives and students’ learning.

All graduate students are welcome. This event grows out of concerns in the Neuroscience department, and so may be most useful to students in related fields.
