Students can become easily disengaged with a course when they do not feel that the course content and skills of the course are applicable to real world situations. This decreased level of motivation may be especially prevalent in introductory courses for which students need to retain a great breadth of knowledge. In the era of big data and increased concern for the replicability of studies, there has been an explosion in the availability of real world data that is publicly accessible. In this workshop, we will discuss potential opportunities for incorporating real world data in a course curriculum and how these strategies may differ depending on the students’ backgrounds.

All graduate students are welcome. This event grows out of concerns in the Biostatistics department and so may be most useful to students in related fields.
