Professor Lustick will lead a workshop on the problem of balancing free speech values and the principle of the University as a marketplace of ideas against positions that instead advocate prioritizing defense of truths and deeply help beliefs about race, discrimination, and sexism, and defense of members of the community at risk for feeling uncomfortable by triggers associated with unregulated discussion of such issues. One specific question is what policies should be adopted, if any, to restrict the spectrum of views allowed to be expressed on campus or in the classroom. The workshop, in seminar fashion, will discuss the pros and cons of rules that may err by excluding speakers who would be enlightening or worth hearing vs. rules that err by opening the campus to speakers whose views as expressed are wrong or damaging.”
All graduate students are welcome. This event grows out of concerns in the Political Science department and so may be most useful to students in related fields.
