Reflection on Teaching Business Cases

Facilitator: Dr. Barbara Kahn, Marketing
Convener: Henrique Laurino Dos Santos, CETLI Fellow, Marketing

The case study is one of the most idiosyncratic tools of business pedagogy. Whether due to their heavy reliance on industry jargon, open-ended questions and variety of solution approaches, business case studies may be starkly different to what students and instructors are used to in other disciplines. In this workshop, Dr. Barbara Kahn of the Marketing department will guide attendees through the variety of strategic choices instructors must make when designing lecture plans centered on case studies. We will tackle issues of presentation, time management, and accounting for student familiarity with business contexts. Joining us will also be Dr. Kahn’s former teaching assistants, all of whom taught the same selection of cases, but with broadly distinct techniques. Food will be provided.

All graduate students are welcome. This event grows out of concerns in the Marketing department, and so may be most useful to students in related fields.

Counts toward the CETLI Teaching Certificate.
