The academic essay has been a popular or, arguably, pro forma assignment choice for many instructors. However, as the pandemic drastically shifted our modes of teaching, course assignments subsequently demanded to be reimagined as well. In this session we will consider the limitations and difficulties of the term paper for both students and instructors, and explore alternative assignment formats for assessing and developing students’ skills around any given course material. We will consider these questions: What possibilities open up when we will deprivilege the term paper as a means of evaluating a student’s performance? How does this move away from the traditional term paper allow for more accessible, equitable, and inclusive course assignments?
