Breakout rooms can be powerful tools for getting students to interact, learn and connect with one another. But they are not always effective. In this session, Courtney Boen of Sociology and Phil Nelson of Physics will talk about how and why they have used breakout rooms in their classes, opening up a conversation considering how to assign breakout rooms, what tasks to assign students and ways to integrate the breakout rooms into their entire class sessions. Discussion will focus on approaches to ensure students make connections and learn in the breakout rooms.
