Among the many ways of using class time, lectures remain a useful and effective way of helping students learn. This session will focus on the anatomy of a lecture by considering how lectures can be most effective: focusing on learning objectives, thinking about ways to make lectures engaging, and considering the role of the body in enhancing the learning experience (even in the virtual space). We will consider these questions: What are lectures good for? How does one approach lecturing as a form of active, engaging learning? How does one prepare a lecture? What are successful ways to open a lecture? What are the roles of visual elements (like slides and demonstrations) as well as the body in lecturing?
