In STEM courses, students are routinely expected to absorb material by listening to lectures when it might be more productive for them to work through challenging problems and get involved in hands-on applications that help them think through the material and understand the details. Studies show that active learning helps students really learn the material by fostering student metacognition and engagement with the course material. This workshop will introduce and critically examine techniques that instructors can use to bring active learning to their classrooms. In particular, we will discuss challenges involved with more student-directed approaches and applications of active learning beyond the lab and in less instructor-focused settings.
