Communicating effectively and efficiently with your students is difficult even in the best of times. In our current educational climate, where remote learning leaves students and teachers at a physical remove with fewer opportunities for quick and easy follow-up, concise and clear communication takes on even more of a critical role in the functioning of your class. In this workshop we will address the cornerstone of student-teacher communication, the syllabus, and different strategies for getting students to attend to and retain the information therein. Understanding that the syllabus sets expectations for the course as a whole, we will discuss the kind of information necessary in such a document as well as dynamic ways to present this information, such as through the use of various Canvas modalities. We will then explore best practices for communicating expectations for in-class assignments, homework, and assessments, with an eye towards dynamic and engaging presentations of information. We will also discuss how to provide students with effective reminders to keep them aware of due dates and major course events even at the busiest times of the semester.
