In a recent publication of the School of Arts and Science’s Resource Hub for Teaching, Marc Meredith, a Professor in the Department of Political Science who co-facilitated the CETLI faculty-to-faculty session "Keeping Students on Track but Providing Flexibility Around Deadlines," shared lessons from instructors across the University about ways to make courses fair and accessible for everyone.  Â
In this video, Meredith cites a few practical suggestions for ways to implement structure and flexibility including:Â Â
- Give students the option to waive some assignments. For example, if you assign a weekly response paper, assign grades to the eight highest submissions of the semester. Â
- Create a late assignment bank. This is a set number of late assignments all students in the course are allowed to use, without explanation. Â
- Allow students to submit assignments electronically. This ensures students can submit assignments on time regardless of physical location.  Â
