SUMMARY:AI in Teaching: When to Integrate It\, and When to Design Around It
DESCRIPTION:Generative AI has transformed the landscape of teaching and learning. While AI use can create challenges for student engagement\, learning\, and assessment\, it can also be a valuable educational tool when incorporated selectively and intentionally. In this interactive workshop\, we will explore how generative AI is shaping student learning and how instructors can thoughtfully design course material in response. The first part of the session will focus on designing assignments that cannot be readily completed using AI and instead require students to demonstrate their own thinking and learning. In the second part\, we will consider ways to intentionally incorporate AI into teaching and assignments to foster learning and critical thinking. Participants will leave with practical strategies for balancing technology-free and AI-enhanced approaches to create learning environments that best support their course objectives and students’ learning. \nAll graduate students are welcome. SUMMARY:Teaching Python in the AI age: Teaching Syntax through Repeated Motifs
DESCRIPTION:As AI-assisted coding tools become increasingly sophisticated\, the need for an introductory Python class to focus exclusively on syntax has decreased. In this teaching workshop\, Nathaniel Trask of Mechanical Engineering & Applied Mechanics will share a course design focused on minimal functional syntax followed by applied experimental units which reinforce concepts with increasing complexity as the semester progresses. For example\, the course begins with an accelerated introduction to basic syntax with no AI allowed and closed book courses where students learn minimal syntax for object-oriented programming. Then a unit on Raspberry Pi using class abstractions of basic microcontroller components provides additional opportunities to reinforce material. A final unit introduces AI and focuses on students using classes designed and reproduced by AI. \nWe will discuss how this sequence takes students with no programming background to understanding the principles necessary to trust AI output and validate it via unit tests and other verification techniques. \nAll graduate students are welcome.
