Working With Students on Their Writing

Facilitator: Jeremy Steinberg, CETLI Graduate Fellow, Religious Studies

The ability to communicate their ideas in writing clearly and concisely is crucial for our students. Yet we often take for granted that students know how to write, both in general and in accordance with the specific standards of our fields. This can lead students who are insightful and are mastering course content to struggle. In this workshop, we will discuss a range of strategies for helping our students become better writers. These strategies will include techniques both for in-class instruction and for office hours. We will also discuss how to give productive feedback on written material, including how to vary that feedback between formative and summative stages of the writing process.
