In this workshop, we discuss how to tailor mathematical instruction to the needs and interests of computer science students, through the lens of Prof. Eric Wong’s experiences with teaching mathematics for machine learning. We will examine what contributes to effective mathematics communication, including considerations such as pacing, presenting on the blackboard versus with slides, and deciding what notation to use. We will also explore strategies for gauging student receptiveness and encouraging interaction.
All graduate students are welcome. This event grows out of concerns in the Computer & Information Science department, and so may be most useful to students in related fields.
Counts toward the CETLI Teaching Certificate.
